Diagnostic and Imaging Center

Offers the most technologically advanced diagnostic testing and imaging services available

Sharon Regional’s Diagnostic and Imaging Center opened July 2007 at the corner of North Kerrwood Drive and Garden Way in the Sharon Regional Medical Park, Hermitage. The 30,000 square foot Center offers the most technologically advanced diagnostic testing and imaging services available, in addition to dedicated areas for women’s health services and health education.

The following modalities at the Diagnostic Center are accredited through the American College of Radiology: CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, and Digital Mammography.

Women’s imaging services, along with other imaging services at the center, is overseen by Allegheny Radiology Associates (ARA), Sharon Regional’s provider of radiology services. William Poller, M.D., director of the breast imaging section for ARA, has designed protocols for prompt turnaround of test results and patient consultations.

Patients choosing Sharon Regional have access to the most advanced imaging and radiology services available, through the ARA radiologists at the hospital and the new center, plus instant access to radiology sub-specialists in Pittsburgh through a sophisticated teleradiology computer link.

One of the highlights is the Breast Care Center, a dedicated area that focuses on procedures specifically related to women. The Breast Care Center features separate waiting and changing areas along with dedicated imaging areas for mammography, ultrasound, and physician consultation.

Cindy Mastrian, RN, CBPN-IC, breast care nurse, is a member of the breast care team that coordinates the care of women through the mammography screening, diagnosis and treatment process.

The Center also offers advanced heart imaging through cardiac CT/MRI: Sharon Regional’s Heart and Vascular Institute provides advanced heart imaging through cardiac CT and MRI, which is based here at the Diagnostic and Imaging Center on Garden Way in Hermitage.  Cardiologist J. Ronald Mikolich, M.D., is based at the Center and specializes in both Cardiac CT Angiography and Cardiac MRI, while maintaining a Consultative Cardiology practice. Dr. Mikolich is board certified in Coronary CT Angiography, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Mikolich utilizes these advanced imaging techniques to diagnose blocked arteries to the heart, malfunctioning heart valves, impaired heart muscle function, as well as congenital heart disease. Frequently, these non-invasive tests help physicians “see” disease processes that are not well visualized with older imaging modalities, such as pericarditis.

Recent advances in CT scanners have made “screening” exams possible for patients without any symptoms. A CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring exam provides a cross sectional view of the heart and blood vessels. A computer measures the amounts of calcium in the arteries of the heart and generates a calcium score. A high score is associated with hardening of the arteries. CT Cardiac Scoring can determine whether or not underlying coronary artery disease (calcified plaque) is present, and the “score” provides an estimate of the extent and severity of coronary disease.

Karen Piccirilli, BA, R.T.R. (M), director, Outpatient Diagnostics and Imaging, and Gayle Linden, LPN, community education coordinator, and a staff of 25 are based at the Center. Including back-up, there are about 45 employees consisting of greeters, aides, CT/MRI techs, Ultrasound techs, x-ray techs, mammography techs, registration staff, and lab staff.

The new Diagnostic and Imaging Center is part of the Sharon Regional Medical Park in Hermitage, which also includes the Advanced Wound Recovery Center; Behavioral Health Services Outpatient Center; Cancer Care Center; Corporate Health Services; Diabetes Center; Hospice/Palliative Care Program; Sports Medicine Services; s and Rehab Center.

A large educational conference center provides ample space for ongoing health education programs and screenings, physician presentations, support groups, community meetings, and other activities.

The Center accepts all physician requests for tests regardless of hospital affiliation.
